Thermal Dynamics

The boys in Class 6b were studying the transfer of heat and decided to take their experimentation to other classes to share what they had learned. They began by showing their audience a metal spoon and a wooden spoon and asking for predictions on which spoon was colder. They allowed people to feel the spoons and everyone considered the metal spoon to be colder.

We then took out a digital thermometer and measured the temperature of both spoons, which revealed them both to be the same. The boys explained that the reason the metal spoon felt colder was due to the conductive properties of metal drawing the heat from your hand more quickly.

The conclusion of the experiment saw the boys asking the classes if they were to place an ice-cube on each spoon, which would melt faster. Most classes assumed because the wooden spoon felt warmer, the ice would melt more quickly. In reality, the ice cube melted faster on the metal spoon, again because of the conductive properties of metal.
