Sixth Class Sculpture

This month, the boys in class 6A worked with different materials to create pieces of sculpture.

We started by studying the work of the Swiss artist, Alberto Giacometti, who was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th Century.

Next we used a very malleable material - tin-foil - to create simple sculptures. To give them more character, the boys included the shadows their figures might cast.

We then moved on to a more rigid material - aluminium. The boys used short strands of metal to sculpt a human figure playing a trumpet. The trumpeter's head was represented with a metal nut and, for the trumpet, we used a brass screw.

We then looked to our surroundings for a way to display our work. Barry, the caretaker, allowed us to use a spare slate from the roof on which to set our sculpture. We affixed the trumpeter to a shard of slate using hot glue and then painted this with slate-coloured acrylic paint.
