On October 23rd 2023, the senior Gaelic football team were crowned Cumann na mBunscol champions in Croke Park. This was a day that the boys involved will never forget, and one that all of the boys from 3rd - 6th class, who were there to cheer on their schoolmates, will remember for a long time also.
After reaching the semi-final last year, the team were more determined than ever this year to go one step further and reach the hollowed turf in Drumcondra. Each of the 25 boys involved performed admirably throughout the whole competition, and after producing an almost perfect performance against St. Marnock's N.S. in the semi-final, they booked their spot in the Cumann na mBunscol final.
Whilst the rest of the school got caught up in the excitement and build-up to the game over the course of the week, the boys trained hard and prepared excellently for the following Monday morning. The school was clad in blue and yellow and the St. Brigid's army were armed with flags, headbands and posters for their journey to support the boys.
The team journeyed through the city by bus, with their family, friends, teachers, classmates and wider community following them closely behind to support them.
On what turned out to be a memorable day for the boys, they produced another brave and courageous performance. Aided by some silky football, outstanding defending and sheer hard-work, they became champions, beating Scoil Thomáis, Laurel Lodge, on a scoreline of 4-09 to 1-09. A new set of St. Brigid's heroes were born!
The boys celebrated wildly and they were greeted by a guard of honour of all school members on their return that afternoon.
A huge thanks to every staff member involved in coaching our teams this year, and a special word of thanks to Mr. Neary, Mr. Melia, Ms. Sheehy and Ms. O'Neill who guided the senior boys since the start of the school year.
We would also like to thank Geraldines P. Moran's GDO Johnny Magee who was worked with these boys closely over the last number of years, and 20 of the panel are a part of the Gers setup.
We hope that this momentous day will ignite the spark in every boy within the school to see the value of playing sport, being physically active and being part of a team environment.
