Transcendental Tessellations

The boys in sixth class were studying the work of the Swiss artist Escher last fortnight. Escher was very interested in incorporating geometry into his painting and gained a lot of inspiration from studying ancient buildings such as the Alhambra in Spain. The class were familiar with tessellations from Maths but to incorporate this into their artwork, they used a method called translation. They started with a square of card, on one side of which they made a design of their choice. They then carefully cut out this design and moved it to the opposite side of their square of card and fixed it there with masking tape. This created a stencil with which they traced tessellating patterns all over the page. Their creative brains were then engaged as they had to observe the pattern and decide what the shape reminded them of, then decorating the page accordingly.
