Throwing Skills

The focus of our PE lessons has switched to the Athletics Strand of the curriculum and the boys will be developing and refining their throwing skills for the next six weeks.

Versions of shot put, javelin and hammer throwing will be introduced to various classes over the six-week period. Additionally the boys will be required to practise and fine-tune the listed throws below for homework. Five minutes per day, every day, is recommended.

Active Homework

Push Throw

Stand with one foot behind the other and hold the ball at chest height. Ball held in both hands with fingers spread behind the ball. Throw the ball at an angle of 45 degrees.

Pull Throw

Ball held in both hands high and behind the head. Throw up and away using both hands using a ‘pull’ motion. Throw the ball at an angle of 45 degrees.

Heave Throw

Stand with feet apart facing direction of throw. The ball is held between the legs – knees are bent. The ball should be swung gently backwards through the knees before throwing forwards with both hands using a ‘heave’ motion. Legs should drive forwards and upwards. Arms should remain straight throughout.

Sling Throw

Stand with feet apart with side of non-throwing arm facing the direction of throw. Throwing arm held straight out fully extended. Experiment with point of release. Throwing arm is held out from the body.
