Terrific Tin Foil

Foil Embossing

This fortnight the boys in 6th class used a novel material to create their artworks - tin-foil!

They began by taking a piece of cardboard and sketching a simple design. Next, they took pieces of thread, string and rope of different thicknesses and glued strips of these along their sketchlines.

Once their design had been fully overlaid with string, we took a strong spray adhesive and glued a sheet of tin-foil over the card. With the pads of their fingers, the boys flattened the tin-foil and smoothed the surface until the design beneath stood out in relief. This effect is called embossing.

The boys then used permanent markers to decorate the piece. This activity required keen listening skills and concentration, as well as providing lots of room for creativity and individuality, as witnessed in the range of artworks they produced.
